He graduated from Syracuse University in 1956 with a major in Radio/TV and began as a sports announcer at WARD in Johnstown, Pa. From there his career in the broadcasting business moved through some of the nation's most prestigious radio and television stations. He was on air at WMBD, Peoria and WDEL, Wilmington Del., and moved into sales at WSYR Radio and TV in Syracuse. From there he went to WCAU in Philadelphia before being promoted to run CBS Radio Spot Sales offices in Philadelphia and Chicago. In 1968 he was named general Sales Manager for WBBM Newsradio 78 in Chicago. In 1972 he went to Atlanta to put WPCH on the air for Sudbrink Broadcasting. When Meredith acquired Peach in 1978, Lauer became general Manager of both WPCH and WGST Newsradio 92. He founded the Georgia Network in 1980 and was instrumental in moving the WGST frequency to 640 after Jacor acquired the station in 1985. Lauer is an accomplished computer programmer having written instantaneous statistics sports programs for the NFL, the NBA, and more than 300 colleges are still using his Statman software to provide information to broadcasters and the media for football and basketball. He left Jacor in 1992 to spend two years doing pay per view television in a joint venture with Katz, and then founded Force Communications with Hal Gore in 1993. Lauer's sales and management experience has played an instrumental part in the brokerage sales by the FCC in the past 4 years.
